They came to earth—Pestilence, War, Famine, Death—four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all.
When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed.
Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed.
Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her … and hers towards him.
And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she'll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.
According to the author, Pestilence is a new adult post-apocalyptic/fantasy novel. It was published in 2018 and written by Laura Thalassa. It is book #1 of The Four Horsemen Series, and set in a dystopian world. All books in this series have a different set of characters and I suppose can be read as standalones. Although, due to the plot, I would suggest reading them in order (not that I continued this series). It's written from the heroine's POV and tells the story of Sara, the ex-firefighter who, contrary to what one might think is not as badass as I thought she'd be and Pestilence, the brute, "I'm mean but I don't mean to" romantic interest.
Regarding the plot, basically she burns him alive but he's immortal so he's not "dead" for long. Then, he kidnaps her, they make their way throughout the northern part of the continent, with him murdering every human in sight while they both sort through their lust, confusion and feelings, they part ways for a bit and finally, they have a happy ending. Apart from some very few interventions regarding mortality and immortality, the plot is repetitive and, in some instances, boring. I had to put the book down, not once, but several times, I even read another book before finishing this one.
The book does have some cool quotes I suppose. The truth is, I picked up this book because of it's cover, it is quite beautiful. Plus, I'd read the Lords of Deliverance Series by Larissa Ione, also about the four horsemen though a lot more in every aspect, so my expectations were pretty high for this one. I don't think I'll be finishing this series. I give it three inconspicuous stars.
